A beautiful, heart-wrenching story. Love the Marcus Aurelius references. A quote attributed to him, "The first rule is to keep an untroubled spirit. The second is to look things in the face and know them for what they are," is one of my favorites and a touchstone for me in the final third of my life.

"The rest of my life has been aftermath." Linda, I was both deeply stricken and deeply, tenderly moved reading this piece. While reading, I recalled my thesis advisor saying that the fact writers deal with some of the darkest material of their lives, yet the effect can be so beautiful and buoyant, shows how really great life is.
