I woke up to the sound of waves and seagulls cow-cowing. Trying to quietly heat my chai and put on my rain boots, I headed through lush fields toward a small studio and wrote for hours. In the afternoon, I met my friend and colleague, Ashley. We walked for an hour along the bog trail, then landed back at our basecamp: Hammer & Sky Studios on Brier Island in Nova Scotia.
Honored to have the time and space to work on our individual projects and brainstorm to keep Unleash thriving and sustainable at a rocky time for arts, I felt immense gratitude for this time. I am here working on a novel. It’s day two, and I’ve already written three-thousand words.
In part because it’s many writers’ dream to run a residency in paradise that will birth art and in part because they’re beautiful humans, who’d greeted us kindly alongside their dog, Millie, I wanted to spread the word about what they’re doing and find out more about how it came to be. The interview above will no doubt inspire you.
Thank you for the time and space, John and Jane. Look out for Ashley’s children’s books and my new novel as a result of this time (give us a little while to refine, folks), and look out for brilliant new developments at Unleash. None of this would have been possible without this time and space.
